Steel and Alloy Wheels for Classic VW Vehicles 

Finding the right wheels for any project car can be a minefield, but we have done our best to make it easy for you. We’ve gathered together a host of top brands with classic styles to best suit your vehicles, be it VW T4 wheels for a day van, race inspired wheels for a VW Golf track car or a retro design reworked to transform your Type 2 or VW Beetle.

Buying steel wheels for your car

Steel wheels were the default choice of most manufacturers up to 1966 when the Fuchs alloy wheel first appeared on the Porsche 911 S model. A forged wheel was specified for its strength and lightness, reportedly saving 3kg per corner in weight and adding to the now infamous handling characteristics of the car.

Steel wheels remain ever popular offering great flexibility whether you are completing a restoration to factory specification or creating a staggered stance by widening the rims. Typically, cheaper than an alloy wheel, steel wheels are easy to paint, stand up to abuse from curbs and potholes a little better and can always be hidden behind some plastic or chrome hubcaps if required.

What does PCD and Wheel Offset mean?

When shopping for new Porsche or VW wheels for your project its useful to understand the concept of PCD and Offset. PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) refers to the stud pattern. This might be 5 x 205 on Splitscreen Bus wheels, 4 x 130 on late Beetle wheels, 5 x 112 on late Bay wheels, 5 x 130 on Porsche wheels and 4 x100 on VW Golf wheels. If you don’t pick the right PCD, your chosen Volkswagen wheels (or Porsche wheels) won’t bolt onto your hubs, leaving you needing adapters or another choice of rolling stock.

Offset and backspace are both measurements to describe where the wheel sits in relation to the mounting face, and the bodywork. A higher offset will tuck the wheel in, and a lower or negative offset will poke out. If you get this wrong your new alloy wheel will either foul the bodywork or suspension components. In many cases where the wheel offset is too high, wheel spacers can be used to change it. If the offset is too low, it becomes a bit more complicated, and bodywork or suspension must be modified for extra clearance.

Buying TUV certified alloy wheels for use in Germany

Owners of watercooled Volkswagens shouldn’t feel left out, we’ve a great selection of retro wheels for early Golfs, Polos, Corrados and more.
