The Series 1 hit the market in the aftermath of the Second World War in 1948, followed by the Series 2 in 1958, and the Series 3, the most commonly seen classic Land Rover, in 1971. These classic off-roaders are simply charming, and much loved by owners and enthusiasts alike. It was the first mass-produced 4-door off-roader made for civilians, with a box-welded frame and non-rusting aluminium alloy bodies. Are Land Rover Series 3 reliable?
The Land Rover Series 3 was produced between 1971 and 1985, making even the very latest examples to roll off the production line close to 40 years old.
If looked after, a Series Land Rover can mechanically be a reliable vehicle, but there isn’t much beyond mechanics to go wrong! Being such a utilitarian machine, it is devoid of almost all creature comforts and will offer a fairly crude on road experience in comparison to its peers at the time, and later iterations, such as the Defender, or even the Land Rover Discovery.
We don’t want to talk you out of owning a Land Rover Series vehicle, just do it for fun, and don’t rely upon it to get you to work every day!
How much is a Series 1 Land Rover?
How much can you afford to spend? Series 1 Land Rovers were produced between 1948 and 1958 and the earliest models are the examples that command the highest of prices, £50,000 and beyond.
Projects can be picked up for less than £10,000 but expect to be partaking in chassis and bodywork repairs before a mechanic signs it off as structurally sound!
Should you be able to look beyond originality, a running and driving example will stand you at £15,000 - £20,000 but expect modifications to include an engine from a later model, a mix match of brake and suspension and plenty of ‘make do and mend’ repairs!
How to tell the difference between Land Rover Series models?
Without over complicating things: Series 1 Land Rovers all have flat doors, with no sill beneath them. Series 2 and 3 Land Rovers have a swage line on the doors, with a sill panel below.
Series 2 Land Rovers have their headlights in the middle of the front panel, with indicators on the wings. Series 2a have their headlamps on the wings, but still with a metal radiator grille.
Series 3 Land Rovers have headlamps and indicators on the wings and a slimmer plastic grille in the centre.
