The VW Splitscreen may be a vintage Volkswagen, but that doesn’t mean you have to put up with rubbish brakes. With regular maintenance and some quality upgrades you can ensure you have full confidence when it comes to pressing the middle pedal and applying the brakes.
Find everything from basic repair and maintenance parts like T2 Split wheel cylinders and brake shoes to complete brake fitting kits, backing plates, master cylinders, hard pipes and brakes hoses for the hydraulic system.
We encourage owners to check their brakes regularly, and to replace worn T1 brake shoes before they get down to the metal and start to leave scratches on the inside of the split bus brake drums.
Inspecting the adjustment of the brake shoes, and ensuring the T2 split wheel cylinders are in good condition will offer peace of mind and add to your driving enjoyment, not to mention help, when it comes to slowing down!
Should you need new brake shoes, wheel cylinders or other braking components we can help! There were a few changes throughout manufacture although ‘Fleetline’ models made in Brazil or South Africa might not follow these rules, so you may need to double check measurements to get the correct parts for the vehicle you are working on.
They may have only been fitted with drum brakes from the factory, but a sure way to improve the efficiency of your T2 Split brake is to upgrade to brake discs.
There are a few brake disc conversion kits from CSP and EMPI which are likely to be of interest, especially if you have tuned your aircooled engine, or even fitted a new motor out the back. Stopping safely should be a high priority!
A big consideration is what wheels you are using, as the disc brakes and calipers will need enough room to operate. The 14” wheel kits will fit behind larger wheels in the future, but the 15” wheel versions won’t fit behind 14” steel wheels.
Along with fitting disc brakes, it is a common upgrade to fit a larger dual circuit master cylinder to improve braking performance and efficiency. We sell a kit to make this as simple as possible, which includes a spacer, Split screen master cylinder and a new brake fluid reservoir.
After fitting new Split Bus brakes it's crucial to take it easy for the first few hundred miles. Heavy braking on brand-new T2 Split brake discs may lead to warping, and ongoing vibration under braking in the future.
Encountering issues with a stuck VW T2 Split brake caliper or seized drum brake is not uncommon. This will cause overheating and uneven wear on the brake shoes or pads, and can even lead to a fire.
The problem may stem from a sticky brake caliper, faulty wheel cylinder, or a perished brake hose. Traditional 'rubber' brake hoses can break down inside over time, creating a one-way valve and locking brake fluid at the wheel end, resulting in jammed brakes. Diagnose and address these issues promptly for a smoother driving experience.
Consider upgrading to stainless steel brake lines for an improved pedal feel, and far longer lasting T2 VW Split bus brake hoses.
