1968-1979 Type 2 Bay Window exhaust systems

Heritage Parts Centre is able to offer a wide choice of T2 Bay Window exhausts to fit models made between 1968 and 1979. As well as standard replacement Volkswagen Type 2 1600cc bus exhausts, we can supply tail pipes, gaskets and exhaust fitting kits for all Bay Window models.

Are all Type 2 Bay exhausts the same fitment?

Please note there were two different engine styles fitted to the Type 2 Bay. The 1600cc Type 1 engine (the ‘upright engine’ as found in the Beetle etc) and the Type 4, 1700-2000cc engine (flatter ‘pancake’ engine) derived from the VW Type 4 sedan. Type 2 exhausts are not interchangeable between these two engine designs.

With no radiator or liquid cooling system to rely upon, the Type 2 Bay heating system takes clean warm air from around the exhaust system and distributes it within the cabin when required. 

This relies on a few key components. The T2 heat exchangers syphon the heat from the hot exhaust system. Should you start smelling exhaust fumes within the cabin, or feeling dizzy, or getting headaches after driving you are in need of new bay window heat exchangers ASAP! As with the exhausts, there are different versions for Type 1 and Type 4 engines. 

What are Type 2 Bay J-Tubes?

If you are living in a warmer climate, or have your heart set on outright performance you may choose to forfeit the factory fitted heating, and fit J-Tubes instead. These still connect to the engine in exactly the same way, but don’t have the additional warm air catching jackets attached to them. This means you can have larger diameter versions, or just save a bit of weight. This option only suits the Type 1 1600cc engine models.
