VW T2 Bay Rear Drum Brake Parts

All VW Type 2 models had rear drum brakes fitted from the factory, and whilst they last a long time it is always a good idea to keep on top of the maintenance with them.

Poorly adjusted T2 rear brake shoes or a leaky Bay Window wheel cylinder could lead to braking inefficiency, causing the vehicle to fail an annual inspection, or pull to one side when braking.

Replacing Rear Type 2 Brake Shoes

You’ll probably find that your Bay Window rear brake drums will last longer than one set of T2 brake shoes, and that’s ok.

For peace of mind, we would suggest renewing the springs and clips that hold the brake shoes in place at the same time as the shoes. We sell these in a handy rear brake shoe fitting kit. Should other components from inside the brake drum, such as handbrake lever arms, distance bars or adjusting screws be missing or damaged, then we can supply those all at short notice too.

Order with Express Delivery and you can have your parts on the next working day in most instances.

Bay Window Brake Drum Backing Plates

If you are completing a comprehensive restoration, then parts such as the T2 brake drum backing plates are likely to find their way into your shopping cart as well. These plates are bolted to the rear hub and are what the Type 2 rear wheel cylinders are attached to.

Supplied in black paint, some customers choose to get these powder coated prior to assembly to add to their longevity, and improve their appearance long term.

T2 Bay Rear Wheel Cylinders

Attached to your rear brake hoses at one end, and in control of pressing your brake shoes against the inside of the rear brake drum at the other, your rear wheel cylinders are a critical component in the braking system.

Operated by hydraulic brake fluid pushing the pistons out at each end, this forces the brake shoes to make contact and generate friction with the inside of the brake drum, slowing the rotation, and in turn, slowing the car. The rubber seals on these can fail, allowing fluid to leak out.

Bleeding The T2 Bay Rear Brakes

If you have done any work on the hydraulic system, such as the brake hoses or rear wheel cylinders you will need to bleed the air from the system afterwards to avoid a spongy brake pedal, and to ensure maximum efficiency.
