The Volkswagen Type 181 (182 in RHD form) was originally designed for the West German Army as a lightweight, covertible jeep and was produced by Volkswagen in Germany, Mexico and even Indonesia, between 1968 to 1983. Although the 181/182 was developed as a military vehicle, civilian versions of the cars were also sold to the public, under several names - as the Trekker in the UK, the Thing in the United States, Kurierwagen in West Germany, (though widely nicknamed the Kübel), the Safari in Mexico and South America, the Pescaccia in Italy and the Camat in Indonesia. These differed from the military cars by not having reduction boxes on the rear axles and a reduced ride height. Civilian sales ended after model year 1980, but production of the 181/182 continued until 1983.
Mechanically, the Trekker was built on the wider floorpan of the Karmann Ghia, with military versions using the rear reduction boxes from the split bus and a raised front suspension. All the cars came with either a 1500cc or 1600cc aircooled Beetle engine.
