What is a Porsche 930? 

930 was the internal model designation given to the 911 Turbo by Porsche, when it was launched in 1975. Based on the second generation 911, often referred to as the G body or G series, the 911 Turbo (930) featured wider rear wheel arches and the iconic ‘whale tail’ rear spoiler than not only assisted with engine cooling but delivered some much-needed rear downforce to a car nicknamed ‘the widow-maker’ for good reason!

What is the difference between a Porsche 930 and a Porsche 911?

Aside from the turbocharged engine and the performance improvements that offered, the big visual difference was the wider body. Because of its notoriety and impact on the sports car scene, the wide body was later made available for customers wanting a normally aspirated, slightly easier to drive Porsche 911 experience in 1984, and the SSE (SuperSport Equipment) or ‘Turbo Look’ was the result. 

The SSE featured the same Turbo styling, 4 pot brakes and Fuchs wheels, but relied on the regular 3.2 flat six, rather than a 3.0 or 3.3 Turbocharged unit. For the pleasure of these upgrades, the customer would pay an additional 27,950 Deutschemarks, equivalent today of around £12,000, on top of the base model price. 

How many Porsche 930 were made?

The Porsche 930 was made in two variations. The initial run between 1975-1977 untilised a 3.0 turbocharged engine producing 260hp and delivering a top speed of 155mph, making it the fastest road car of its day. The later version from 1977-1989 had a 3.3 litre engine developing 300hp. Only 2819 of the first iteration were produced, but a very healthy 18,770 of the 3.3 Turbo were sold. 

So, if you want one, there are always Porsche 930 for sale. You just need to have the money… 

Why are Porsche 930 so expensive?

The Porsche 930 project was era defining, and responsible for the homologation of the turbocharged engine, which led to Porsche taking the 935-endurance racing in FIA Group 5, recording over 150 wins worldwide including an outright win at Le Mans in 1979, and a podium lock out!

The 911 Turbo was the range topper of the time, and with that came Athena posters, the cult films and every child in the world wanting a Porsche, a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. Today, those who have the means, can live up to that childhood fantasy, and spend their hard-earned cash on what they consider to be an icon of their youth. 

As we have mentioned with other Porsche models. The Porsche brand tends to be quite stable when it comes to financial investments, and for those with the cash to spend, why not invest it in the pick of the G series 911? We know of some collectors who have bought one with absolutely no intention of ever driving it, for that very reason!!

How much is a Porsche 930?

As with all cars, especially classics, the prices vary. At the top of the tree, you have the celebrity owned vehicles. Steve McQueen owned a 1976 ‘Turbo Carrera’ (the name the 930 was launched with in the US), and that very car was sold at auction in 2015 for $1.95 million. Wow!

Back down on planet earth, the regular classifieds will find you a number of Porsche 930 examples in the £125,000 ballpark, depending on condition, colour, mileage etc. If you buy one and then become Hollywood famous, well, you’re quid’s in when it comes to sell!
