    VW Golf Mk2  Rear Disc Brakes – Repair, Restore or Upgrade!  

    It was only the Mk2 Golf GTI models (and G60 variants) which benefited from factory fitted rear disc brakes. All the other models were fitted with drums brakes. But, you don’t have to stick with drums if you don’t want to.

    If you are just carrying out a regular service, then a new set of Mk2 Golf rear discs and brake pads will probably see you right. Take a little bit of time to lubricate the handbrake mechanism on the caliper while you are there, and ensure the brake pads are sliding freely, as these have a habit of rusting and getting stuck. 

    Traditionally, owners would install Mk2 Golf GTI rear calipers onto a less sporting model, but the current preferred choice is to use Mk4 Golf rear calipers, which are less prone to seizing. Keep in mind that this upgrade will require custom handbrake cables, and conversion brake hoses to deal with the banjo fitment upon the caliper.
