Volkswagen fitted disc brakes to the front of their Bay Bus from 1970 in a bid to increase safety and improve driver confidence. It worked… These vehicles do stop better, and disc brakes are more efficient.
However, they do still need maintenance and replacing every now and again, and we are here to help should you be shopping for brake discs, Bay Window brake pads or even replacement Bus brake calipers.
Whilst both using the 5/112 PCD, there are two different brake discs for the Bay Bus. Early models 1970-72, use one type, and the Late Bay brake discs are slightly different.
We’re sure you won’t be surprised to hear that the brake pads and the calipers also follow suit and change in 1973, with the arrival of the T2b, the Late Bay.
Shielding the brake discs from road debris and helping to keep things cool are the brake disc backing plates. An important, but often overlooked component. If yours are rotting away, we’ve got your back!
Whilst it is best practice to replace braking equipment in pairs (discs / drums / pads/ shoes) you can just fit new brake pads if there is still life left in the discs. Of course, do change them on both sides!
You’ll likely need a Bay Bus brake pad fitting kit, which ensures the new pads won’t rattle around, and aims to eliminate annoying squeaking too.
The alloy from which brake calipers are made is prone to corrosion and if you have pulled a vehicle out of a hedge, a damp barn or a river it is likely these will be too far gone to rebuild. However, should you have a Bay Window brake caliper with a leaky or perished seal, we can supply a rebuild kit that will allow you to recommission the original part, rather than replace it with a new one… The choice is yours!
