Minimize Body Roll in Your Split Bus - Explore Uprated Sway Bars
The VW Splitty, with its higher centre of gravity and distinctive profile isn’t the best through sweeping corners, or tight changes of direction. However, an uprated Split Screen sway bar will provide increased stiffness, reducing the tendency for ‘body roll’ when you are negotiating roundabouts or travelling and higher speed.
Split Bus Rear Suspension
The VW Split rear suspension is similar to that of a VW Beetle, although it employs the use of reduction boxes to assist with the gearing. These can be serviced and kept in place on original vehicles if required but should be removed if you are planning on installing a performance engine.
It is well worth noting that reduction boxes reverse the direction of the transmission, and as such, if you remove them you’ll be left with 4 reverse gears and 1 forwards! This can be rectified by flipping the differential in the transmission, or fitting a Beetle Transmission instead.
Lowering the rear of VW Split Screen Bus
There are two common choices for owners looking to lower the rear of your Split suspension.
Straight Axle Conversion, which utilises a VW Beetle trasnmission, but will give similar rear camber to a Beetle as the ride height is reduced.
I.R.S Independent Rear Suspension, which can be done using Super Beetle (1302/1303) or Bay Bus components. This will keep the wheels sitting vertically in the arches, despite reducing (or increasing) the ride height.
