Keep your Bay Bus travelling in the right direction with our comprehensive range of Bay steering parts.
The Bay Window is not best known for its precision, when it comes to steering, so it is important to keep on top of maintenance and in particular the condition of the components that connect the steering wheel in the cab to the tyres on the road.
Underneath the cab floor, you’ll find the Bay Window steering box and steering damper. This transfers the directional changes made by the steering wheel and controls the track rods to steer the road wheels where you want to go. The steering box is a functional, but antiquated design, and as such there is a degree of slop in the system.
Connecting the steering column to the steering box is the Bay Window steering coupling. A round disc with four holes, these are made from a tough rubber, with metal inserts inside, but can split and deteriorate over time, or the nuts and bolts can become loose. Both could lead to a dreadful driving experience and could cause an accident if left undiagnosed.
Other components in operation under the cab floor include the Drag Link, T2 Tie Rods and the Bay Window steering damper.
On the end of each track rod, you’ll find a ball joint – the top being enclosed by a rubber boot, although these are prone to perishing, and will fail an MOT if split. Track rods are also adjustable in length and control the vehicle ‘tracking’, the angle at which the wheels roll down the road.
The Bay Window steering wheel is deliberately big. With no power assistance, it offers additional leverage for parking and turning in tight spaces. Many owners choose to stick with the original style Bus wheel; however, we can offer a number of alternatives, including Bay Window woodrim steering wheels plus the correct fitting boss and horn push to ensure safe and secure fitting.
