VW Vanagon Rear Drum Brakes
Make sure your VW Vanagon Rear Drum Brakes are working at their best!
Through regular maintenance you can ensure your Vanagon rear brakes will be doing their best at slowing you down, or holding you stationary when parked. It is worth noting that all Vanagon models made in Europe were delivered with drum brakes at the rear, and these are the same for all years (1980-92) with the exception of the 4wd Syncro models.
Vanagon Syncro rear brakes measure 270mm in diameter, as opposed to regular 2WD models that have 250mm rear drums. The matching Vanagon brake shoes will of course be smaller in both diameter and width. Unsurprisingly the Vanagon brake drum backing plates also differ between 2WD and 4WD models.
Make sure your Vanagon Rear Wheel Cylinders don’t leak…
Operating your rear brake shoes every time you press the pedal are the rear wheel cylinders. It is important to check for signs of brake fluid leaking both inside and outside the brake drum as this will heavily compromise both your braking efficiency and your personal safety.
We offer a couple of options when it comes to rear wheel cylinders for Vanagon models, with an OEM option and a reproduction item that offers better value for money for those on a tight budget.
Efficiently Bleed Your Vanagon Rear Brakes
After any hydraulic system work, such as replacing the rear wheel cylinders or Vanagon brake hoses, you’ll need to bleed the system to remove any air.
Air left in the system will give you a spongy pedal feel, and poor performing brakes, with the danger of the pedal dropping to the floor under heavy load. It is a fairly easy job for a DIY mechanic to do, and something we would suggest you carry out when replacing the old brake fluid every few years.
