Is your Golf Mk2 Alternator Working Correctly? 

Fed up with flat batteries and always having to carry jump leads? Sounds like your Mk2 Golf alternator has stopped working and is no longer charging your car battery while you drive.

You can check for a faulty charging system quite simply with a multi-meter. It’s worth testing for a parasitic drain in the electrical system when the car is switched off too. This could be from the car radio, an alarm, or a light bulb you never knew you had!

VW Golf Mk2 Ignition Parts 

One of the most common reasons for misfire or poor engine performance is down to the ignition system. Not the ignition switch itself, although we do sell those; we mean the components that are involved in creating the spark to ignite the fuel within the combustion chamber.

Starting with the Mk2 Golf coil, typically mounted to the firewall or bulkhead. The coil generates the spark. If you have no spark, start your fault diagnosis here.

The Mk2 Golf Distributor is the next major component in the chain of events, housing the rotor arm and in many cases the points and condenser too. Although later models may be fitted with electronic ignition that replaces these antiquated contact breakers.

Golf Mk2 HT Leads or Ignition leads as they are often called, connect both the coil to the distributor and from the distributor cap to each individual spark plug, located in the cylinder head.

It is worth pointing out that should you own a Diesel model, you won’t have this system in place… instead, you’ll just have Mk2 Golf glow plugs to worry about.

Rotor arms, distributor caps, and spark plugs are common service items and should be changed or at least inspected annually. Mk2 Golf ignition points may need adjusting every few months. This is a simple task, although a little fiddly. You will need a set of feeler gauges.
