VW Golf Mk1 Rear Drum Brakes
Repair and Restore your Mk1 Golf Rear Brakes
Even the range topping GTI models had drum brakes fitted as standard on the rear, and for many enthusiasts these are still more than enough to slow the car down in today’s traffic.
Whether you are shopping for new Golf Mk1 brake drums, replacement brake shoes for Mk1 Golf, wheel cylinders, backing plates or brake hoses, you have come to the right place.
Heritage Parts Centre: Your Source for Quality Golf Mk1 Rear Drum Brake Parts
There’s something quite satisfying about rebuilding your rear brakes and then finishing the job off with brand new Mk1 Golf brake drums… If you refit the originals all that nice new stuff seems a bit hidden away.
You may even choose to paint the new brake drums prior to fitting, just be sure not to get any in the wheel bolt threads or the centre section where the wheel bearings go.
Brake Drum Backing Plates for VW Golf Mk1
These pressed metal backing plates form the foundation for the rear brakes on your Mk1 Golf. Your originals may be heavily corroded or possibly damaged, or perhaps you just fancy replacing everything with new whilst you are doing the job.
The Golf Mk1 brake backing plates are what your wheel cylinders will attach too. Likewise, the brake shoe fitting kit with all the springs and pins fasten to this metal plate too.
Are your Mk1 Golf Brake Shoes needing replacement?
If you are hearing a scraping noise from the rear when you brake, or experiencing poor handbrake efficiency, this could be an indication that your Golf Mk1 rear brake shoes are needing replacement.
It’s a relatively easy job, and with the help of a workshop manual or a You Tube tutorial, you should be able to work your way through it with a basic DIY tool kit.
Of course, should you feel unsure we absolutely recommend getting a professional to check your work or doing the job for you, as brakes are a safety critical part!
Fitting new Wheel Cylinders for Golf Mk1
The Golf Mk1 rear wheel cylinders are part of the hydraulic circuit, so should you need to replace one, perhaps if it is leaking brake fluid, or is seized and not moving at all, you will then need to bleed the entire brake system of air, before you drive the vehicle.
Whilst this sounds tricky, it’s not too bad, and there are plenty of one-person, pressurised air systems on the market to make it much easier for the solo mechanic.
Take care when removing the metal brake pipes from the back of the wheel cylinder. You don’t want to damage these joints, as that would mean a lengthier job to replace the entire brake pipe.
New Golf Mk1 Rear Brake Hoses
Bridging the gap between moveable suspension and steering components are the brake flexi-hoses. These are made of rubber and connect to the hard metal lines and /or the brake caliper or wheel cylinder. They do perish over time, so whilst working on the hydraulic side of the braking system it makes sense to change these too.
