Did VW fit Power Steering to VW Mk1 Rabbit?
According to our records there was a power steering option on the late ‘tin top’ models, but we’ve never seen it in person. Should you need Mk1 Rabbit power steering parts though we’d love to hear from you. Whether it’s a replacement Rabbit Mk1 steering rack, new steering rack boots, or the track rods and ball joints, we will do out best to help.
Manual steering is the most common option on these cars, and we can supply steering racks for Mk1 Rabbit in both LHD and RHD form, along with the required steering rack bushes for mounting them, the relevant nuts and bolts, not to mention the Rabbit Mk1 steering column gaiter to keep the universal joint nice and clean.
Adjusting the tracking on VW Mk1 Rabbit
If you have altered the ride height on your car, or recently overhauled the suspension it is important to get the wheels realigned correctly. This will prevent premature tyre wear or the vehicle wanting to steer more in one direction than the other when you let go of the wheel.
This can all be adjusted on the Rabbit Mk1 track rods, and by winding them in and out you adjust their length. Too short and they’ll pull the steering in, and too long they will push the Mk1 Rabbit track rod ends further out, causing the wheel to point in the opposite direction.
Most large workshops will have a facility to do this with a laser alignment tool. We’ve covered steering geometry in some depth on our blog, should you find this subject of interest.
